Since the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, he has pioneered research on earthquake prediction, demonstrating that "ionospheric" anomalies are the main player and can occur prior to major earthquakes. He has led research on short-term earthquake prediction, international research networks, and the development of young researchers. In recognition of these achievements, he received the Order of the Sacred Treasure in 2025.
